A Local’s Guide to Ullanlinna – Celinas Favorite Spots and Hidden Gems

My name’s Celina, and from March to September 2024, I lived in a Comodo apartment in Ullanlinna. At the time, I didn’t realize how much this unexpected move would shape my view of Helsinki. But after settling into my new home, I started seeing the city from a whole new perspective.Living in Ullanlinna made me appreciate not only the beauty of this district but also the charm of everyday life in Helsinki. After my seven months here, I moved on to explore other neighborhoods—Punavuori, Kallio/Hakaniemi, Jätkäsaari, and Töölö—but Ullanlinna will always hold a special place in my heart.

The Elegance and History of Ullanlinna

Ullanlinna, which translates to “Ulla’s Castle,” is one of the oldest and most prestigious neighborhoods in Helsinki. It dates back to the 18th century, originally serving as a fortified line at the southern edge of the city. Today, it’s known for its waterfront views, charming streets, boutique shops, and parks. It’s also one of the most expensive districts in the city, so if you get a chance to stay here—even for a short time—you’re in for a treat.

One of the most famous parks in Helsinki, Kaivopuisto, is just a short walk from Ullanlinna. It’s a popular spot for jogging, picnicking, and enjoying the seaside views. While you’re there, make sure to visit Café Ursula, which has been serving locals since 1952, or Café Carusel, a family-run café and bakery known for its cozy seaside atmosphere.

"The Shipwrecked"

Another must-visit green space is Tähtitorninvuori Park (Observatory Hill Park), which offers stunning views of the sea. It’s also home to the sculpture by Robert Stigell—an expressive piece that captures movement and struggle rather than commemorating a specific event.

Everyday Discoveries – My Favorite Local Spots

To start off with, on the same street as Comodo’s apartment on Tehtaankatu, you’ll find Ompelimo Ateljee Inese, a seamstress/travel agency. I frequently visited the seamstress to have clothes fixed and altered, and I even recently had a curtain made for my mom there. The ladies who run the place are super friendly and customer-service oriented. They’re also affordable and fast!

Right next door, you’ll find the restaurant Mat Distrikt. I loved this place, especially in the summer. I would get off the tram from work and go to their terrace for one drink and just watch people while unwinding from the day. The food is also delicious, and the bartenders make fabulous cocktails.

Turn the corner from Tehtaankatu, and you’ll find a new joiner to the block—Meringue Café & Glam. Run by two young ladies, this all-pink, girly café offers delicious goodies, including cupcakes, pulla, and tiger cake, and sells goods from local designers. They’re also incorporating a little library into the store to really offer that mindfulness break.

Across the street, ladies can find their go-to for any facial needs at Ihonhoito Salmi. Rated 4.6/5.0 on Google, this little facialist is worth the hype. They’re the only place to offer the J Lo Glow Booster Facial, which gives you that glow. I tried that myself as well as a treatment for hyperpigmentation. The staff speaks both Finnish and English and are super friendly, catering to whatever your needs may be.

Walk forward 50 meters, and you’ll find the hair salon Freya. With 622 five-star ratings on Timma, the reviews speak for themselves. There is an incredible hairdresser called Shawn from Australia, who is amazing. I went there with a botched haircut, and he made it disappear—I once again felt beautiful. I plan on going there again in the future. On the other side of the road and at the end of Pietarinkatu, there’s a sushi buffet. Unfortunately, I never noticed them before, but if you like sushi, it’s absolutely worth a visit!

Circling back to Tehtaankatu, there’s Kaivopuiston Kala, your local fish market. I wish I would have visited there because I love fish, but I often saw it buzzing with people. So if you’d rather make your own sushi, why not buy your fish from there?

And in the middle of Tehtaankatu, right before you enter Eira, there’s Eira’s Flower Kiosk, always bursting full of color no matter the season.

Design District and Boutique Shopping

Ullanlinna is also part of Helsinki’s Design District, meaning you’ll find plenty of unique boutiques and concept stores. The most famous shopping street is Korkeavuorenkatu, home to:

Beyond Korkeavuorenkatu, around Tehtaankatu, you’ll also find boutiques selling lighting, wedding dresses, and furniture. It is also here where you’ll find grocery stores, hairdressers, the R-Kioski, and even the local fish market.

Why Ullanlinna Will Always Be Special to Me

Living in Ullanlinna wasn’t just about having a beautiful apartment in a prestigious district—it was about experiencing a piece of Helsinki’s history and everyday life. The mix of old and new, small local businesses, and a strong sense of community made it feel like home.

Even though I’m now living in Punavuori, I still find myself returning to my favorite spots in Ullanlinna. Whether it’s for a coffee at Mat Distrikt, a treatment at Ihonhoito Salmi, or just a walk in Kaivopuisto, this district will always feel like home to me.

If you ever get a chance to stay in Ullanlinna, take it. You’ll experience not only the elegance of one of Helsinki’s most beautiful neighborhoods but also the warmth of the people who make it special.
